Amazonian is a big, dependable cubensis strain with a reputation for being easy to like. The effects lean toward the body and the mood rather than heavy visuals, which is a large part of why it turns up on so many beginner shopping lists.
Find your Amazonian dose
Lab-based estimateThis strain averages about 1.36% total tryptamines against roughly 0.9% for a typical cubensis, so the ranges below are scaled to it. Pick how far you want to go:
These are relative starting ranges, not a measurement of your bag. Potency swings two to four times between batches of the same strain. Start at the low end, wait at least 90 minutes before judging, and do not redose the same night.
Numbers: strain averages from Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup lab results where available; gram ranges adapted from Psychedelic Support’s dosing guide. Taking medication or new to all of this? Talk to a health professional first. Not medical advice.
What It Looks Like
Amazonian is hard to miss. It grows large, with long firm stems and broad caps, and stands out mostly on size alone. A typical specimen runs to roughly these dimensions:
- Size: tall, with stems around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) and caps 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) across;
- Cap: reddish cinnamon brown when young, fading to golden brown and then light yellow, sitting nearly flat and round at maturity;
- Stem: white to yellowish, thick, hollow, with a faint veil once it matures.
Like most cubensis, Amazonian bruises a bluish green where it is handled or picked. That is normal and does not affect potency, so do not worry if your caps show a little colour.
Where It Comes From
The modern history of this strain begins with the Pacific Exotica Spora company, which is why you will still see it labelled P.E.S. Amazonia. P.E.S. were the ones who put it on the commercial map; who first gathered the original spores is still an open question.
It has been grown and cultivated for well over 50 years at this point. There are also long-standing reports that its wild ancestors were used in ceremony across parts of South and Central America, though the deeper history is murkier than the marketing usually admits.
How to Take It
Whatever your dose, weigh it on a proper scale rather than eyeballing it. A little precision goes a long way, especially the first few times.
You can simply chew and swallow dried Amazonian, but be ready for the earthy, slightly bitter taste that not everyone enjoys. If that is a dealbreaker, a few common workarounds help:
- grind the mushrooms into a fine powder to make them easier to get down;
- stir the powder into a flavourful drink or fold it into food;
- pair them with something rich like peanut butter or chocolate spread, or blend them into a smoothie.
One thing worth knowing: heat breaks down psilocybin, so hot tea and cooking will quietly weaken your dose. Plenty of shroom tea recipes exist online, but if you want a predictable trip, we would steer you away from them.
Effects to Expect
Effects generally last 4 to 8 hours from first bite to baseline. Outside of a microdose, they usually come on 30 to 50 minutes after you take them and peak somewhere around 70 to 90 minutes in. What you actually feel depends heavily on how much you take.
Microdose
- Sharper focus and less mental fog;
- Lower fatigue and anxiety;
- A gentle lift in mood and productivity;
- An easier, more social headspace.
Minimal recreational
- Small shifts in perception: edges that seem to breathe, faint sparkle, brighter light;
- Noticeably more creativity;
- A real mood boost when the set and setting are right.
Full recreational
- Stronger changes in perception;
- A therapeutic, reflective quality for those who go looking for it;
- The possibility of a personal, meaningful headspace.
High dose
- Clear psychedelic effects: visual movement, altered sound and light, a deeper trip;
- Easier introspection and self-reflection;
- A big swell of empathy and open-mindedness;
- Loose, heavy limbs and full-body relaxation.
Heroic dose
At the top end the experience becomes intense and genuinely unpredictable, shaped as much by your mindset and surroundings as by the mushrooms. This territory is for people who already know their way around psychedelics, not for a first outing.
It is worth remembering that the strain is only half the equation. Dose, setting and mindset do just as much to shape the trip, so treat all three with respect.
When It Suits
Amazonian leans gentle, which makes it a comfortable companion for ordinary occasions:
- Reconnecting with people you are close to;
- A walk through the woods or a quiet park;
- Staying in, listening to music and watching the walls do their thing.
Because it favours body feel over heavy hallucination, it is well suited to a familiar, safe space with a sober friend nearby. It also tends to heighten your appreciation of art and sound, so good music and images are a nice touch. All of that assumes a calm place, a good state of mind, and no one around likely to sour the experience.
Staying Safe
A few habits keep an Amazonian trip on the rails. Clear your schedule for the next 6 to 8 hours and pick surroundings where you feel genuinely at ease, since setting matters more the higher you go.
If it is your first time, start low and build up slowly. There is no prize for overshooting, and it is a lot easier to take more next time than to talk yourself down from too much now.
Keep psilocybin away from other substances. No alcohol and no medications, especially anything prescribed for mental health, as the interactions can be unpredictable. If in doubt, wait for another day.
Similar Strains
There is no separate, stable Amazonian variant with different effects. The closest thing is Albino Amazonian, a harder-to-grow, near-white version (a false albino) that behaves the same once you get past the look.
Amazonian is a safe, well-trodden choice for beginners and veterans alike. If you want more punch or a different character, these are worth a look:
Penis Envy
The opposite end of the spectrum: Penis Envy is loaded with psilocybin and hits hard even at modest doses. Strictly for experienced trippers chasing something intense.
Golden Teacher
Milder and more measured, Golden Teacher is the pick for relaxed, introspective, faintly philosophical trips. A natural next step from Amazonian.
B+
Often confused with Amazonian but noticeably different in practice: B+ delivers a shorter, more visual and more playful experience.

We were visiting Toronto last week and decided to order some mushrooms to our BnB 🙂 We are super happy with the whole experience. Staff were very helpful, the mushrooms were top notch (and we have a lot of experience to compare to) Big, clean, beautiful mushrooms that were cracker dry and gave us an amazing experience with strong visuals and very little body load. 10/10 would recommend
