Death Star is a Psilocybe cubensis known for two things: a mellow, forgiving trip that runs about four hours, and a cap that stays a proud golden yellow even after drying. It is one of the easier strains to recommend to someone new to mushrooms.
Find your Death Star dose
Estimate, not lab-confirmedThis strain averages about 0.7% total tryptamines against roughly 0.9% for a typical cubensis, so the ranges below are scaled to it. Pick how far you want to go:
These are relative starting ranges, not a measurement of your bag. Potency swings two to four times between batches of the same strain. Start at the low end, wait at least 90 minutes before judging, and do not redose the same night.
Numbers: strain averages from Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup lab results where available; gram ranges adapted from Psychedelic Support’s dosing guide. Taking medication or new to all of this? Talk to a health professional first. Not medical advice.
What It Looks Like
The first thing people notice is the colour. Death Star carries a vivid yellow-gold hue that sets it apart from the browner, earthier cubensis strains, and it holds that shade even when dried. Mature caps also develop a small ring, or “skirt”, around the stem.
- Size: larger than the average cubensis, usually 3 to 8 inches tall.
- Cap: bell-shaped while growing, then flattening out with cracked edges as it matures. The colour runs brighter at the rim and darker brown toward the centre, roughly 2 to 4 inches across.
- Stem: long and fairly slender next to the cap, yellowish on the outside with white flesh inside, straight and firm, sometimes wider at the base, with that telltale skirt on older specimens.
Handle a fresh one and the bruised spot tends to turn bluish, the usual cubensis sign that psilocybin is present. Dried, the caps hold their gold rather than fading to the dull tan you see with a lot of other strains, which is the easiest way to tell Death Star apart in a jar.
Where It Comes From
Death Star belongs to Psilocybe cubensis, the species first described by American mycologist Franklin Sumner Earle in Cuba in 1906. He originally filed it under the genus Stropharia; the “cubensis” tag is a nod to that Cuban find. In 1948 the German-born mycologist Rolf Singer moved it into the genus Psilocybe, where it has stayed since.
The Death Star strain itself has a murkier backstory. It is usually said to have surfaced in the United States in the late 1990s, but its origin is more folklore than record, and no one has properly documented it. It caught on quickly all the same, helped along by how easy it is to grow and how gentle the trip tends to be.
How to Take It
Eating the dried mushrooms straight is the simplest and most reliable method. The psilocybin inside converts to psilocin once it hits your system, and that is the compound doing the work. The flavour is a fruity, slightly sweet-and-sour mushroom taste, which not everyone loves. If that is you, a few things help:
- Chop them small. Smaller pieces are easier to get down.
- Take them on an empty stomach. An empty gut absorbs the psilocybin faster and tends to bring the effects on sooner and stronger.
- Fold them into cold food. Finely chopped mushrooms stirred into a cold dish are an easy way to mask the taste.
Another option is a lemon soak: steep the chopped mushrooms in lemon or lime juice for 15 to 20 minutes before eating. The acidity starts converting psilocybin to psilocin ahead of time, which can bring the trip on faster and make it shorter and more intense. Whatever route you take, skip anything hot. Adding mushrooms to tea, soup or a warm meal exposes the psilocybin to heat, which breaks it down and weakens the effect.
If chewing whole mushrooms is not your thing, our psilocybin edibles and psilocybin chocolate bars deliver the same active ingredient in a friendlier format, and we also carry DMT vape pens and microdosing capsules if you are after something different.
Effects to Expect
A Death Star trip usually lasts 2 to 5 hours depending on your tolerance and how much you take. First effects tend to show up within 20 to 30 minutes, with the peak landing in the first hour or two. The strain is on the gentle side for a cubensis: it eases you in rather than throwing you straight into the deep end. Roughly, here is how the experience builds as the dose climbs.
Microdose
- Full-body relaxation with no real visual load.
- A subtle sense of connection to things around you.
- A lift in creativity and lateral thinking.
Light Recreational
- Mild visual shifts and movement in patterns.
- A stream of thoughts you tend to watch more than steer.
- Introspection that often turns pleasantly social.
Full Recreational
- Clearer visual and auditory distortions.
- Crossover effects like seeing colour in sound.
- A refreshed, reset feeling once it wears off.
High Dose
- Loosening of the usual sense of self.
- Intense, introspective headspace and insight.
- Euphoria and a feeling of connection to something larger.
Heroic Dose
At the top end the experience is unpredictable and very personal. Nausea and headaches are possible, especially if you are not experienced, and the trip gets hard to put into words afterward. It is not a place to start. Work up from smaller amounts and respect your own limits.
When to Reach for It
Death Star leans more toward feeling and introspection than heavy visuals, which shapes when it fits best. A microdose can lift the mood and sharpen your sense of connection at a festival or a social gathering, on a nature walk somewhere familiar, or wandering a museum or gallery where it deepens how you take the work in. At higher doses that introspective streak is the whole point. Psilocybin is also an active area of mental-health research, with ongoing studies into its potential for conditions like depression and PTSD. Whatever the occasion, your mindset and surroundings shape the trip as much as the dose does. Start somewhere calm and familiar, like home, and branch out once you know how the strain sits with you.
Staying Safe
The first rule with any psilocybin mushroom is not to mix it with other substances, alcohol and antidepressants in particular. Beyond that, a few habits keep things smooth:
- Have a trip sitter. A sober, trusted friend is reassuring for beginners and a useful anchor for experienced users if the trip gets rocky.
- Clear your schedule. Set aside a few undisturbed hours so you are not clock-watching or dealing with obligations mid-trip.
- Weigh your dose on a scale. Small differences in amount make a real difference in effect, so measure rather than guess.
- Go in open-minded. Every trip is its own thing. Drop the expectations and let it unfold.
None of the effects people report are guaranteed or medically verified, and the good ones depend on being in a decent headspace, a calm place, and good company. Dose carefully and stay well clear of the deep end.
Similar Strains
Death Star has no documented variations or crossbreeds; it is too poorly recorded for that. If you want to branch out, the Amazonian strain is the natural next step: it feels close to Death Star but carries more psilocybin and psilocin, so it hits harder, and it also comes as microdosing capsules if you would rather ease in. Golden Teacher and Blue Meanies are both worth a look once you have a few trips under your belt. You can browse the full lineup on our magic mushrooms page.
