Albino Penis Envy, or APE, is one of the most potent Psilocybe cubensis mutations you can buy. It crosses the famously strong Penis Envy with an albino parent, giving ghost-white caps, dense stubby stems, and a hit that lands well above the average cube.

What It Looks Like

APE is unmistakable once you have handled it. Next to regular Penis Envy it runs shorter and paler, and it bruises deep blue at the slightest touch:

• Size: stubby, roughly 4 to 6 inch stems with caps around 0.5 to 1.5 inches across;
• Cap: pale white and bulbous, gills pressed tight to the stem since it barely sporulates;
• Stem: unusually thick and white, bruising blue where you touch it.

That ghostly look is the Fanaticus albino mutation; the thick, loaded stem is pure Penis Envy. According to the Psilocybin Cup, APE tests among the stronger cubensis variations, though it is not the single strongest out there.

Where It Comes From

APE has the short, well-documented backstory you expect from a lab-bred strain. Sporeworks are generally credited with isolating and spreading reliable spore samples. Penis Envy itself is the messier tale: it traces to the McKenna brothers in the early 1970s, and while Steven Pollock usually gets named as the one who stabilised it, some accounts point to Rich Gutierrez instead. Hamilton Morris chased that thread for Vice in 2009 and again a decade later, interviewing Gutierrez himself.

How to Take It

Dried mushrooms are simplest eaten as small pieces, but APE is dense, bitter and chewy, so most people work around the taste:

• Grind it to a powder or cut it small and swallow without chewing;
